Malt Extract Broth

Catalog Number: AS-1287

Malt Extract Broth is used for detecting, isolating, and enumerating fungi, especially yeasts and molds. It also supports the cultivation of strains for microbiological vitamin assays.

Malt Extract Broth contains polysaccharides derived from malt extract, providing a primary energy source while contributing to the slightly acidic nature of the medium. It is enriched with mycological peptone, a rich nitrogen source that supports optimal microbial growth. For selective cultivation, antibiotics, tartaric acid, or lactic acid can be added to inhibit bacterial growth and enhance medium selectivity. A modified version of this broth is recommended by Reiss for selectively growing Aspergillus flavus. Additionally, according to Rapp, the addition of specific indicator dyes to malt extract agar can help differentiate yeast and bacterial colonies.
