Malt Extract Agar is a specialized growth medium designed for the cultivation of fungi and yeast. It contains malt extract, providing a rich source of carbohydrates to support microbial growth. The medium’s acidic pH helps inhibit bacterial growth, promoting the growth of fungi, including yeasts and molds. To enhance selectivity, antibiotics, tartaric acid, or lactic acid can be added. Reiss recommends a modified version of the medium for the selective growth of Aspergillus flavus. Rapp demonstrates that adding specific indicator dyes to Malt Extract Agar can help differentiate yeast colonies from bacterial colonies.
Storage:
Store the container at 15-30°C. Prepared agar should be stored at 2-8°C.
