Brilliant Green Agar (BGA) – ISO 6579-1 Reference Medium for Salmonella Isolation
CAT No.: AS-1150
Overview
Brilliant Green Agar (BGA) is a highly selective solid culture medium designed for the isolation and differentiation of Salmonella spp. (excluding S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi) from food, feed, and environmental samples.
It is the classical reference plating medium used globally and remains the mandatory second selective agar in ISO 6579-1:2017, used in parallel with XLD or equivalent media. BGA is widely adopted across Europe, Asia, and international food safety laboratories, particularly in poultry, egg, and meat testing.
Ausamics Brilliant Green Agar is manufactured to meet the performance expectations of ISO, DIN, and international reference methods, comparable to leading brands such as Difco™, Merck™, and Oxoid™.
Applications
Direct plating after selective enrichment
(Rappaport-Vassiliadis, Selenite Cystine, MKTTn)Official second selective agar in:
ISO 6579-1:2017 (Annex D)
DIN 10160
Multiple national and regional Salmonella testing methods
Routine Salmonella screening in:
Poultry & egg products
Meat & meat products
Food processing environments
Environmental monitoring samples
Key Features & Selectivity
Very strong inhibition of competing flora
(E. coli, Proteus, Pseudomonas) via:Brilliant Green dye
Phenol Red indicator system
Clear and characteristic Salmonella colony morphology
Reliable differentiation based on lactose/sucrose fermentation
Performance aligned with Edel–Kampelmacher formulation
Colony Characteristics
(18–24 hours at 35–37 °C)
| Organism | Appearance |
|---|---|
| Salmonella spp. (non-typhi) | Pink-red to red colonies, 1.5–4.0 mm, smooth; H₂S-positive strains may show greenish-black centres |
| E. coli / Coliforms | Strongly inhibited or very small yellowish colonies |
| Proteus / Pseudomonas | Inhibited or tiny pale colonies |

Preparation Instructions
Suspend 50.0 g of dehydrated medium in 1 L purified water
Heat with frequent agitation and boil for 1 minute
DO NOT AUTOCLAVE
(Brilliant Green is heat-labile and excessive heat reduces selectivity)Cool to 45–50 °C, mix thoroughly
Pour plates and allow to solidify
